Google has launched a series of educational advertisements about privacy protection. The “Good To Know” ads will appear in major U.S. newspapers and magazines, and on billboards, subways and various websites. As part of some ads, Google will try to explain why search engine results are more helpful if the engine knows more about a user’s past searches and interests. The campaign is viewed by some as a disingenuous public relations offensive. Critics often cite that Google collects too much personal information about users, and that Google is incentivized to collect that data as it assists in targeted Internet ads, which generate most of Google’s revenue.
