Local media in Hong Kong threatened legal action against Google for copyright infringement as it launched its " Hong Kong news" website on September 9, 2004 . The Google site uses news summaries from local media and provides links to their websites. In defending its actions, Google's spokesperson referred to its news services as a "digital newsstand" offering headlines from a variety of newspapers, from which users can choose which site to visit. Publishers who do not want to be included in Google news can opt out, although this is rare.
