A recent report indicates that Google has decided to keep logs of searches, along with information linking the searches to specific computers, for a period of 18 to 24 months, after which the logs will be made more anonymous. Previously, Google maintained search logs and linking information for an indefinite period. The move by Google is intended to address privacy concerns raised by privacy advocates, regulators and users. However, some pro-privacy organizations have criticized the move as potentially setting a de facto standard that does not go far enough, citing continuing concerns around the use of such information for behavioural targeting in advertising, and possible release of such information to law enforcement officials.
