Google Accuses China of Blocking Gmail

Google has accused the Chinese government of interfering with its email services in China, making it difficult for users to access Gmail.  Problems include difficulty sending emails, and difficult accessing the home page for Gmail.

After an investigation by Google, it was determined that there were no technical problems on Google’s side which caused such disruptions.  Instead, Google stated that “this is a government blockage carefully designed to look like the problem is with Gmail.”

China strictly controls what its citizens can view on the Internet, and it blocks many popular social media sites, including Facebook, Twitter, and Youtube, from being accessed.  Shortly after pro-democracy protests erupted in the Middle East, there were anonymous calls for protestors to gather for a “Jasmine Revolution” in China.  This led to further restrictions by the Chinese authorities over the Internet.

China has categorically denied Google’s accusations.
