French Court Orders Heineken to Remove Beer Ads from Website
Heineken must remove beer advertisements from its French website, www.heineken.fr, after the court of appeal upheld a lower court decision. The lawsuit, launched in France by the National Association for the Prevention of Alcoholism and Addiction, claimed that Heineken’s ads violated the French code of public health, which prohibits advertising alcohol except in certain specified media. Because the Internet is not expressly listed in the statute as a permitted medium, the court held that the website ads were illegal.
