On March 16, 2007, two of twenty-seven people indicted for enterprise corruption and conspiracy pleaded guilty to the charges in New York. The two, a couple, took part in an Internet sports gambling operation. The case is significant because it represents the first gambling charges brought in the United States since the enactment of the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA) in October 2006. The UIGEA outlawed certain financial transactions related to online gambling that made it extremely difficult, if not impossible, for Internet gaming operators to receive funds from their U.S. customers.
