First SPIM Arrest

An 18-year old New York man was arrested for "spim", the moniker given to spam that targets instant-message services. This new type of spam is easier to track because instant messaging systems are closed loops, with central control. However, instant-messaging is an attractive target for spammers because its users are younger and more vulnerable. Providers of instant messaging programs are working to attack the problem - for example, Microsoft has required its instant-messaging users to update software for security purposes.
