The Privacy Commissioner of Canada and the Information and Privacy Commissioners of Alberta and British Columbia announced on January 26, 2004 that they will cooperate to establish a unified approach to handling private sector privacy complaints. Their goal is to develop consistent rules of enforcement that avoid conflicts of jurisdiction in response to new privacy laws which became effective on January 1, 2004.
The federal law, the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA), has been applied in stages since 2001. The rules that became effective on January 1, 2004 deal with the collection, use and disclosure of personal information in the course of commercial activities throughout the private sector. The Alberta and British Columbia acts are both known as the Personal Information Protection Act (PIPA).
