Facebook to Comply with Canadian Privacy Recommendations

Canada’s Privacy Commissioner announced recently, following a year long investigation as well as 30 days of negotiations, that Facebook will add “significant new privacy safeguards” to bring its Facebook social networking website into compliance with Canada’s private sector privacy laws. The California company has agreed that it will retrofit its application platform in a way that prevents any applications from accessing information until it obtains express consent for each category of personal information it wishes to access; users will thus be able to control which information third-party developers are permitted to access. This change will affect hundreds of thousands of third-party developers that create applications, such as games and quizzes, for the social networking site.
