Facebook Seeks Ad Patent

Facebook has applied for a patent in the United States for a method to overcome the limitation placed on targeted advertising when a social network site user fails to supply personal information about the user’s interests. For those users who do not supply sufficient information, Facebook can use “inferential” targeting. The technology bases the ads presented to a user on the interests of the user’s friends. The patent application also indicates that the technology would allow Facebook’s advertising customer to specify the applicable targeting criteria.
