Entertainment Industry Appeals Ruling That Favoured Grokster

The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) have appealed an April 2003 U.S. Federal Court ruling by Judge Stephen Wilson that held for the first time that some file-swapping software was legal. The ruling by Judge Wilson was a serious setback for the RIAA's strategy of suing peer-to-peer network operators and software developers in order to curb the rapid growth of entertainment related file trading.

RIAA's president, Cary Sherman has called Judge Wilson's decision "wrong" and further stated that companies such as Grokster "are businesses that were built for the exclusive reason of illegally exchanging copyrighted works, and they make money hand over fist from it. The Court of Appeals should hold them accountable.
