EU Releases Privacy Study

The EU's Joint Research Centre released a study dealing with the impact of new technologies on privacy. The study looked at three emerging areas, including identity management (preventing identity theft online), location-based services (Global Positioning Systems using cell phones and other technology) and virtual residence in an ambient intelligence environment (advances in "smart" technology). When looking at the security measures in place for the various technologies, the report recommended that the invasion of privacy caused by security measures that are in place for our protection should be temporary and limited. As well, the report stated that a longer term balance between privacy and security needs to be struck when dealing with the development of an information society.
