EU Could Seek $100 Billion from U.S. Based on WTO Internet Gambling Claim

Following Antigua’s successful WTO dispute ruling that the U.S. illegally targeted online gambling while permitting American operators to offer remote betting on horse and dog racing, reports suggest that the European Union will ask the United States to provide $100B in trade concessions. The figure has been proposed by attorneys related to the case but does not appear to be an official EU position.

The U.S. has argued that it never intended to include gambling within its WTO commitments. Following the WTO ruling in favour of Antigua, the U.S. has moved to clarify its position under the Uruguay Round and withdraw gambling. The proposed change has opened the door to compensation claims and several WTO members, including Canada, are in talks with the U.S.

Antigua is seeking $3.4B in “trade concessions” including the right to suspend copyright on American movies, software and music.
