The European Commission has decided against imposing new regulations on the use of radio frequency identification (RFID) tags to address security and privacy concerns in favour of developing a set of “softer” guidelines. The move is intended to avoid regulatory restrictions that may throttle the valuable application of the technology in transportation, health care and other sectors.
But the EC warned that if regulators determine the widespread use of RFID does not preserve privacy, safety regulators will step in with appropriate legislation. An RFID stakeholder group will provide assistance in developing policy. Amendments to the e-Privacy Directive are to be proposed by mid-2007.
