Documentary Film Makers Concerned About Copyright Issues

Documentary film makers are voicing concerns about copyright – but the concerns are not about protecting their films, but rather about obtaining materials for their films.

Documentarians at Toronto’s Hot Docs Film Festival last week explained how it is becoming more difficult to get clearances to access and use various copyrighted materials in their films. Of particular concern, they allege, is the fact that ownership of image archives and sound libraries is consolidating in a few large players, which means that it is more difficult for independent film makers to get access. This is surprising, since effeciencies of scale and the benefits of one stop shopping should make transactions easier and cheaper. Perhaps other reasons are at work.

As a result of these concerns, there is a growing movement for a Creative Commons system for copyright use which will let documentary makers share and reuse footage.
