Dish Network and EchoStar have agreed to pay TiVo $500 million to settle a patent infringement lawsuit involving TiVo’s video recording technology. In addition, as part of the settlement, TiVo will license its technology to Dish Network and EchoStar, while EchoStar will license to TiVo certain DVR-related patents. The settlement came after a U.S. federal appeals court upheld a ruling in favour of TiVo last month.
The lawsuit between the parties commenced in 2004, when TiVo accused Dish Network of violating TiVo’s patent for Time Warp software, which allows users to record one TV program while watching another.
