Last week, Connecticut’s attorney general issued a subpoena naming Craigslist in connection with an investigation by 39 states into whether the mostly free online classified ad service may be illegally profiting from prostitution. Craigslist does not charge users to post most ads, however, it does charge for those posting ads for sex and therapeutic services. The subpoena seeks documentation relating to the revenue generated by sex-related ads, the review process for such ads and law enforcement activities. Craigslist has denied any wrongdoing and takes the position that it is a leader in the fight against human trafficking and exploitation.
