Citigroup Loses Nearly Four Million Customers Data

CitiFinancial, the consumer finance division of Citigroup, has begun notifying approximately 3.9 million customers that tapes containing their personal data, including social security numbers, have been lost. The tapes were apparently lost by the courier UPS in transit to a credit bureau. The announcement follows a number of incidents in which financial institutions have had to warn customers that their personal information has been lost or stolen.

In addition to issuing the warning, Citigroup has arranged assistance for its customers in the form of account monitoring services and, if they become victims of identity theft, an identity theft resolution service. Starting in July, Citigroup says it will send information electronically in encrypted format.
