On October 18, 2010 the Chinese government sent a female citizen, Cheng Jianping, to a labour camp for re-posting a message from Twitter. The message urged Chinese anti-Japan protesters to attack the Japan pavilion at the Shanghai Expo. Allegedly, the retweet was meant to be satirical of Chinese “nationalists”.
Cheng’s fiancé believes that the main reason for Cheng’s detention is her involvement in human rights activities, including celebrating on Twitter the winning of the Nobel Prize by Liu Xiaobo, who is serving an 11-year sentence for being a human rights activist.
Despite the government’s repression of free expression, human rights activists in China are able to use Twitter by bypassing government controls.
