China Using Software to Standardize Criminal Sentencing
A recent report indicates that a court in China has used a software program to determine the appropriate sentence for individuals convicted of criminal offences. The software is intended to standardize prison sentences and avoid abuses of discretional power by judges, influence by officials and arbitrary sentencing. It is anticipated that the software, which has been tested for two years in a court in the city of Zibo, will be adopted by more courts in the province of Shandong.
