Canadian Online Music Sales See Big Increase

Just as Apple announced that it would start renting movies through downloads from its iTunes store, a Nielsen report shows that Canadian online music sales have almost doubled from their 2006 levels.

Perhaps this is a function of our cold climate. Canadians are buying more digital music than our neighbours to the south. In fact, the figures in the Nielsen report show Canadians buying 73 per cent more digital singles in 2007 compared to a 53 per cent increase south of the border.

These statistics should put more focus on the proposed copyright reform legislation that is anticipated to mirror America’s Digital Millennium Copyright Act. It may be that our less restrictive copyright law actually results in more legitimate music downloading.
