Canada's Department of Justice has released a report ("Report") on the submissions received as part of its lawful access consultation. These consultations were held as part of a review to consider the impact of new communication technologies on police and national security investigations. The Report provides a summary of the written submissions of different interest groups such as law enforcement agencies, companies, organizations and the public in response to the Lawful Access Consultation Document, released in August 2002. The latter encouraged input from different groups on a range of proposals geared to modernize the current lawful access legislative framework.
The Report provides useful suggestions on how the proposals under the Lawful Access Consultation Document can be improved and changed. While the Report does not contain detailed information on individual submissions, it summarizes key contributions from the various interest groups.
