As part of the International Consumer Protection and Enforcement Network (ICPEN) Fraud Awareness Month, the Canadian Competition Bureau has completed a two-day Internet surveillance and enforcement program in conjunction with 76 other government agencies around the world. The Internet Sweep focused on identifying scams and spam, particularly relating to weight-loss products, found on the Internet. Competition Bureau officers conducted searches of Canadian-based websites offering unrealistic performance claims and also collected spam through email harvest accounts. The results of the Internet Sweep will be analyzed and followed up with any necessary enforcement action. Over forty Canadian private and public organizations have been participating in Fraud Awareness Month in order to educate the public on how to protect itself against Internet fraud.
