High-speed Internet access will be made available through hydro lines in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario by local energy supplier, PUC Inc. Data will piggyback the existing power infrastructure through broadband power line technology (BPL). The speed of the service is expected to meet or exceed that of cable and phone companies and pricing will be competitive.
Consumers will be serviced by local wireless access points installed along PUC's medium voltage lines, allowing subscribers with a wireless access card to use the service anywhere in the city within range of an access point. A market trial of the service is expected within the coming weeks with broad deployment anticipated before the end of the year. The company is also investigating the possibility of offering "second-line" telephone service along its high speed lines.
PUC's technology partner is Amperion Inc., an American firm that includes Cisco Systems Inc. as a strategic investor. Amperion Inc. claims to be in discussions with all of the major hydro utilities in Canada. In the United States, the company has 12 power line trials in progress and already offers commercial service. It is anticipated that other hydro utilities in Canada will follow PUC's lead in providing High-speed Internet access over hydro lines.
