All Computers Inc. of Toronto has filed a patent infringement suit against Intel Corporation seeking $500M (U.S.). The complaint, filed May 19 in the United States District Court (Eastern District of Virginia), alleges that the manufacture, use, sale and offer for sale of certain computer products by Intel infringes All Computer's U.S. Patent No. 5,506,981.
The patent relates to an accelerator board for use in replacing the microprocessor of a slow speed system with a microprocessor operating at a higher speed. The patent was filed October 1, 1993 and issued April 9, 1996, over eight years ago. All Computers alleges that Intel's "infringing products include but are not limited to its line of 'Pentium Processors'."
The complaint alleges and All Computer's counsel is reported as saying that Intel was approached with an offer to license the patent but ignored the offer. Intel spokesperson Chuck Malloy reports that Intel considers the suit is without merit and will defend it vigorously.
