The Official United Kingdom Charts Company changed the rules for its Official Singles Chart on January 1, 2007 to include singles downloaded over the Internet. The previous rules generally counted the sale of physical formats such as CD and vinyl. However, the sale of singles over the Internet has rapidly overtaken the sale of singles through a physical recording. The change in rules is designed to make the chart more reflective of what Britons are actually buying.
