MySpace, which hosts the popular MySpace social networking website, recently settled a dispute over the Barack Obama MySpace page by granting the rights to control of the page to the Barack Obama Presidential campaign. The dispute arose between the Obama campaign and Joe Anthony, a one-time supporter of Obama who started the MySpace page under Obama’s name. The Obama campaign later worked with Anthony on the content for the page, which Anthony continued to operate on a volunteer basis.
After two and a half years, the Obama campaign became concerned with its ability to control the content of the page, which had grown to include 160,000 MySpace friends. When the Obama campaign requested that Anthony turn over control of the page to them, Anthony requested payment of $39,000.00 for the work that he had done on the page, which the Obama campaign was not prepared to pay.
Although MySpace awarded control of the page to the Obama campaign, Anthony was given the right to take all the friends who signed up while he was in control. The Obama campaign is trying to rebuild the friends-network from scratch.
