An Australian man, Nicolas Stacey, who pleaded guilty to stalking and using a "carriage service" (public network) received a three month jail sentence. Mr. Stacey had been living in the United States with his American girlfriend and returned to Australia to finalize his divorce with his wife. While he was in Australia, his girlfriend ended the relationship and told him not to return to the U.S. Mr. Stacey then began to make up to 40 abusive phone calls a day to his ex-girlfriend. He also sent her, her family and her co-workers threatening emails containing explicit photos. The stalking continued for four weeks before he decided to stop his actions and receive counselling. During Mr. Stacey's sentencing hearing, the magistrate stated that in some ways the case was worse than a physical assault because the permanence of the electronic material in cyberspace has implications for the woman's future security and well-being.
