Apple Inc. has taken action on two fronts against rival HTC and its Google Android-based phone. Apple filed a patent infringement suit against its Taiwanese rival with the U.S. District Court of Delaware and a related trade dispute before the U.S. International Trade Commission, which has powers to block imports of infringing devices.
The dispute relates to 20 patents, including touch screen technology in Apple’s iPhone and related products. Though once cozy, Apple and Google have distanced themselves from one another and are increasingly in competition with each other in the device space and for corporate acquisitions.
Apple is no stranger to asserting its patent portfolio. Recently, former Sun Microsystems CEO Jonathan Schwartz said Steve Jobs personally threatened to sue Sun but was rebuffed with Sun’s patent portfolio assertion.
