Earlier this month Apple was granted U.S. patent no. 7,814,163, which describes a system that allows users to restrict text messaging content that can be sent or received from a given cellular device. This is an apparent response to the “sexting” phenomena, and is ostensibly aimed at enabling parents to prevent children and teens from sending and receiving inappropriate text messages. If such a message is sent or received, the software is designed to alert other users (i.e. parents).
The patent application lists other potential applications of the software, such as in the education field to be used as an aid in language learning. Another potential application would be by companies to monitor employee conduct and usage of company property.
