Airport Security Agency Breaches Privacy Act

The Privacy Commissioner of Canada has found that that the Canadian Air Transport Security Authority (CATSA) breached the Privacy Act. These findings arose out of an audit of CATSA's privacy policies and practices.  The Commissioner found that CATSA collected too much personal information about travellers (e.g, reports on incidents that were not within CATSA's mandate regarding aviation security) and left sensitive personal information within view of passengers and others.  In some cases, the breaches were caused by CATSA failing to exercise due diligence in overseeing the activities of its subcontractors.  CATSA has agreed to address all of the Commissioner's recommendations.
