The Privacy Commissioner of Canada found that it had jurisdiction over a bank's disclosure of private information, as banks are a federal business and as such are covered under the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA). The bank's manager, despite acknowledging being trained on privacy matters, disclosed information about a client's line of credit to his fiancée. The manager stated that she (the manager) though the fiancée to be an agent of the client for the purpose of receiving the financial information. The disclosure led to a cancellation of the couple's wedding. The bank has confirmed that it will require written authorization before disclosing any further information to agents of clients.
