The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) has approved the sponsored top-level domain “.asia”. This new domain was requested by the organization that handles domain names for China, South Korea, Japan, Vietnam and other countries in the Asia-Pacific region, and will allow Asia-Pacific businesses to use a regional domain designation rather than having multiple country-level domain names; in this sense, the “.asia” domain is similar to the “.eu” domain, which came into effect last year.
Although ICANN has approved the “.asia” domain, the contract setting out details of the implementation has yet to be finalized; therefore, registrations of English-language “.asia” domain names are not expected to begin for another six to nine months. Apparently “.asia” registrations will be limited to businesses, individuals and groups in the Asia-Pacific region (which includes Australia), but the specific eligibility requirements are not yet clear.
