Xerox Corporation, the Connecticut-based global document management company, is suing Internet search giants, Google Inc. and Yahoo! Inc., for patent infringement. Xerox specifically alleges that Google and Yahoo infringed Patent No. 6,778,979 (which describes a system for automatically generating queries) with the services Google AdSense, Google AdWords, Yahoo! Search Marketing, the Yahoo! Publisher Network, and Yahoo!'s Y!Q Contextual Search; as well as Patent No. 6,236,994 (which details a method and apparatus for the integration of information and knowledge) with the services Google Maps, Google Video, YouTube, and Yahoo! Shopping. Xerox explained that the patents were granted to it in 2004 and 2001, respectively, and that it had previously, but unsuccessfully, sought a licensing arrangement with Google and Yahoo! over the patents. Xerox is now seeking an injunction against Google and Yahoo, a common step in patent trials. Google and Yahoo, however, have stated that they intend to fight the allegations.
