Wikipedia Use in Immigration Proceeding Criticised by Federal Court

A judge of the Federal Court of Canada has criticised the use of Wikipedia as an information source by federal immigration officials in cases involving asylum seekers. Citing the collaborative and unsupervised nature of the information collection, in a decision posted to the Court’s website the week of April 18, 2010, Mr. Justice de Montigny concluded that reliance upon the source was risky due to the source’s unreliability. The issue has received comment in other judicial review proceedings in immigration matters over the past four years.
