Virginia City Provides High-Speed Internet over Power Lines

Manassas , Virginia , has just completed the citywide installation of broadband-over-power-line technology and has become one of the first places where the service is commercially available. This new technology, which allows Internet access through any electrical outlet, uses the existing infrastructure of the electricity grid and therefore does not require the installation of new fibre-optic cable.

Power line high speed Internet access is being promoted as an alternative to cable or phone line Internet services. However, it is not clear whether a working business model has been developed, although the technology certainly works, some trials in other areas of the United States have been cancelled because there were not enough customers to generate a profit.
