The Italian fiscal police of Rieti, a town near Rome, imposed last week a record breaking fine of up to 1.4 million Euros (US$1.8 million) for using thousands of pirated MP3 files in a nightclub. The DJ had more than 2,000 MP3 files, and 500 video clips, suspected of being illegal downloads. The fine was imposed as a part of a fiscal police operation targeting radio stations and clubs in the region.
According to the Italian Recording Industry Association (FIMI), the fine is the harshest imposed to date on an individual in Europe for the illegal copying and use of MP3 files. The fine remains subject to administrative recourse.
Enzo Mazza, director of FIMI, declared: "This DJ was touring clubs and making money out of the music he played - while those who had invested time, talent, hard work and money into creating the music in the first place did not get a cent. We hope this precedent will serve as a deterrent for those who are thinking of doing the same."
