The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), a powerful trade group representing the U.S. recording industry, announced on June 29 that it is filing a new series of copyright infringement lawsuits against 784 alleged illegal file sharers.
The "John Doe" suits allege illegal distribution by individuals of copyrighted music on the Internet via peer-to-peer services such as KaZaa, LimeWire and Grokster. The lawsuits were filed in federal district courts across the U.S.A., following the unanimous U.S. Supreme Court decision in MGM v. Grokster, allowing copyright suits against peer-to-peer software companies.
