The State of Kentucky has recently passed a law designed to regulate Internet pharmacies. The law contains provisions that require Internet pharmacies to be licensed to sell and ship prescription drugs to persons in Kentucky. In order to obtain a licence, the pharmacy must have national certification from the Verified Internet Pharmacy Practice Sites (VIPPS). VIPPS certification requires the pharmacy to accept only prescriptions from a physician who has seen the patient in person and can be a costly process. The law also allows shipping companies to seize any package that is believed to contain a controlled substance being shipped from a non-licensed source. Violations of the law are punishable as a felony with a maximum sentence of 5-10 years.
