LimeWire Liable for Copyright Infringement

A Federal Court in New York City has granted summary judgment in a copyright infringement case against the popular file-sharing service LimeWire and its creator. The action was commenced in 2006 by the Recording Industry Association of America, a group that represents the interests of record companies. The key findings in the decision was that LimeWire was trying to profit by promoting the illegal use of its technology, and that LimeWire’s users were engaged in a “substantial amount” of copyright infringement, which the company had not taken meaningful steps to prevent. The court has not yet ruled on the damages for which LimeWire will be liable.
