A recent report indicates that Google Australia and other local Australian search engine companies have come under increased scrutiny for potential violations of Australia’s Interactive Gambling Act 2001. The Act makes it illegal to advertise gambling services on websites primarily used by Australians, which may be violated given that searches performed on such search engines can produce advertising links to online gambling sites. It has been suggested that while prosecutions against basic listings of gambling services have been rare, it is more likely that the Act will be enforced in respect of websites that publish sponsored links.
