Amazon.com Settles E-commerce Patent Dispute for US$ 40 Million

Online retailer Amazon.com announced last month that it had settled a dispute with Chicago-based Soverain Software LLC. In documents filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission, Amazon.com described its non-exclusive license arrangement for the one-time payment. Soverain originally filed suit in Texas claiming patent infringement. The dispute was later extended to include further Soverain patents for a total of five.

The five patents in the two lawsuits cover various aspects of e-commerce, including a Web-based sales and payments technology, an interactive virtual shopping cart, a URL-based system for session identification and management, and hypertext statements. Soverain's website describes the company as a software and services provider of e-commerce solutions for online retailers. Soverain acquired the patents from Divine, a bankrupt enterprise application integration tools vendor.
